Match the composition to the paper shape

A4 is 210 × 297 mm with the familiar 1:1.4142 ratio. Letter is 8.5 × 11 in, while a 2:3 poster ratio fits sizes such as 24 × 36 in.

Locking one of those ratios keeps the crop frame in that shape while you drag a corner. Free mode removes the ratio constraint when the composition matters more than a standard paper shape.

Use exact coordinates when dragging is not precise enough

X and Y set the crop origin in source pixels. W and H set the surviving pixel dimensions, so you can repeat a crop or align it to artwork measurements without estimating by eye.

When a ratio is locked, changing W or H adjusts the other dimension and keeps the rectangle inside the source image.

Translate cropped pixels into physical print size

At 300 DPI, every printed inch needs 300 pixels. A 2550 × 3300 px crop therefore maps to 8.5 × 11 in before any printer-specific bleed is added.

The live readout shows inches and centimeters for the current crop so you can decide whether to continue, resize, upscale, or choose a different frame.

Make the crop fit the real print, room, and subject

Paper shape, viewing distance, subject scale, and edge content should guide how much of an image survives.

Start with the physical format

Paper size should come before framing. A 16 × 20 in print uses a 4:5 crop, every ISO A-series sheet keeps the 1:1.4142 relationship, and a 2:3 crop matches formats such as 24 × 36 in.

Measure the intended wall area, frame opening, or paper stock before trimming pixels. A free image cropper for printing is most useful when the final physical shape is known before composition decisions become irreversible.

Crop differently for near and far viewing

Viewing distance changes how aggressively you can crop. A large poster seen from across a room can tolerate a tighter frame because the subject still reads clearly at distance.

You can open JPG, PNG, and WebP files. Export is available as PNG or JPG; PNG can preserve transparency while JPG uses 90% quality and places transparent pixels on white.
Should I crop before or after using Rasterbator?
Crop first when composition or paper ratio is the decision you need to make. Then use the cropped result in Rasterbator so the poster layout starts from the exact framing you already approved.
Should I crop an image or resize it?
Crop when you need to remove edges or change framing. Resize when you want to change pixel dimensions while keeping the full composition. If the source is too small after cropping, upscale it before the final poster layout.
How many pixels do I need for a 300 DPI print?
At 300 DPI, one inch needs 300 pixels. Divide the cropped pixel width and height by 300 to get print inches, then multiply by 2.54 for centimeters. For example, 2550 × 3300 px is 8.5 × 11 in at 300 DPI before any printer-specific bleed.
Can I crop an image into a circle?
Yes. Switch the crop shape to Circle and the frame locks to a square with a round mask. Circle exports are PNG with transparent corners — JPEG cannot store transparency, so the JPG option is disabled while Circle is active.
